Have I told you that the best time to visit Romania is during fall? I might be biased but bear with me. You might reach the same conclusion.
Once school starts in September, the official tourist season is over in Romania until the Christmas break in December.
This means that, while cities are busier than during the summer, the countryside is a paradise that you can have all for yourself in the absence of crowds.
And if you visit Romania, you can’t really say you visited without spending some time in the countryside, particularly in Transylvania. And while we’re at it, there are other regions in Romania that are lovely during fall and are worth discovering, such as Bucovina or Maramures.
Bucovina is the oldest and most beautiful part of Romania, also known as the heaven of Moldova (a region in Romania not to be confused with the Republic of Moldova). The painted monasteries are a must while traveling here. Masterpieces inspired by Byzantine art, tell visual stories about the past, often showing important moments from the history of Christianity or tales from the Bible. Eight of them are under UNESCO protection.
Maramures is considered by many the heart and soul of rural Romania. It’s like an open-air museum, where everything is frozen in time. The villages, the traditions, and even the people’s way of life are beautifully preserved and have been followed for generations. Maramures is the place to be if you are looking for art, culture, traditions, and spectacular landscapes. You should definitely put the wooden churches of Maramures on your list. They are an outstanding example of wooden architecture, with impressive towers that rise up to 78 meters high. Eight of them are now under UNESCO protection.
But I digress…
The weather
The weather during fall is absolutely perfect. If the occasional rain doesn’t bother you, October is great for visiting and spending time outdoors. The temperature is not too cold and not too hot, it is just right.
In Transylvania and in the mountains it can get chilly at night, but this only makes for a great excuse to get cozy next to a fire.
The nature
Nature is just breathtaking.
Whether you prefer cities or the countryside, nature is everywhere in Romania. Cities are filled with parks and green spaces and the countryside, well, consists of mostly nature.
The colors during fall are mesmerizing. The different shades of yellow, red, and bright orange contrast the green grass making the landscape seem like a painting.
The sunsets
If you like to chase sunsets as I do, Romania during fall will not disappoint.
The clear blue skies after the rain coupled with a few clouds are the perfect combination for bloody sunsets.
The food
October marks the beginning of the season for winter food. This means that you’ll be pampered with various soups, stews, cured meats, desserts, and fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables.
In fact, we are sure that you are going to love the food as this is one feedback we constantly receive from our guests, that Romanian food is great.
