With its diverse terrain, Romania offers plenty of options for outdoor activities in each of the 4 seasons.
While most foreigners seek to visit Romania during the summer, my favorite time of the year to explore the country is actually fall and winter.
First, if you love rural life and traditions, the Christmas season in Romania is absolutely magical.
Second, if you are into winter sports, particularly skiing and snowboarding, you might fall in love with Romania.
Why? Because it offers more than 130 ski slopes spread across the country, which makes it perfect for a winter escape to Romania, paired with exploring the countryside and different landscapes.
Predeal is one of the most known ski resorts in Romania, due to its close proximity to Bucharest (3hr drive).
With 8 kilometers of slopes, Predeal is the perfect ski destination for families with kids and for those who wish to explore the area.
Some of the best places to visit during a day trip from Predeal are Peles and Bran Castles, or Brasov city.
Poiana Brasov is the most popular ski destination in Romania due to its central location and easy access from most cities, and one of the largest.
With more than 22 kilometers of slopes, it offers something for everyone. Slopes for kids and beginners, intermediates, and also experienced skiers.
Entertainment is abundant, from plenty of cafes and bars, apres-skis, and clubs, to restaurants with traditional Romanian food, making Poiana Brasov quite crowded during the peak season (Dec-Jan).
For those passionate about snowboarding, the recently opened Transalpina Ski Resort is perfect.
With plenty of slopes and breathtaking views toward the Carpathians and Lake Vidra, Transalpina Ski Resort is a snowboarder’s dream.
Having been opened recently, the prices of accommodation and other services have yet to catch up with other, more famous resorts, offering great value for money.
Situated in the Apuseni Mountains (part of the Carpathians), Straja is one of the most loved ski destinations in Romania, due to its laid-back atmosphere.
Experienced skiers and snowboarding enthusiasts prefer Straja Ski Resort because it is home to the longest slope in Romania (8 kilometers) and plenty of other slopes, totaling 26 kilometers.
Equipped with night installation, Straja is perfect for an evening ski or snowboarding tour.
Its location is great if you are in Romania and want to pair skiing with visiting.
Sibiu, Cluj, Sighisoara, and some of the most beautiful villages in Transylvania are a short drive away, making it a perfect destination for a first-time visitor to Romania.
