Romania is a country with a rich history and culture that attracts visitors from all over the world.

Beautiful waterfalls in Romania

Cascada Cailor

Legend has it that the mountain on which the waterfall sits was the preferred place for locals to take their horses from spring until fall. The pasture is rich and of rare beauty and so the horses could graze there undisturbed.

However, it is said that bears started surrounding the horses and, pushing them closer to the edge, the horses didn’t stand a chance and fell prey to the bears.

Since then, the locals have named this waterfall the Cascada Cailor or The Horses Waterfall in Romanian.

It has a 90 meters fall and several smaller successive falls, making it one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Romania.

It is located in the Northern part of Romania, in Maramures, one of the most beautiful regions of Romania, where some of the last virgin forests of Europe can be found.

Cascada Bigar

Bigar Waterfall is not only one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Romania but was also featured many times as the most beautiful waterfall in the world.

If you get the chance to visit it you will understand why. As with many places around the country, a legend is at the center of why so many people come to visit the waterfall, besides its beauty.

It is said that a couple of locals who were not able to conceive, once dreamt of a witch who told them that if the woman will drink water from under the rocks between the two worlds, they will have a baby. If they will have a girl they should not let her fall in love as she will find her death through love.

The woman went and drank the water from under the rock and later they had a baby girl. She grew only to fall in love with a boy named Bigar. Scared of the curse, the father of the girl locked her in a cave on the mountain.

The witch, seeing the girl suffer, decided to pay her a visit to the cave and turned the girl’s hair into a waterfall. Bigar jumped into the water and together they both died. They met in the world after and were able to live their love.

Legend has it that couples who drink water from the Bigar waterfall will have eternal love.

Cascada Urlatoare

The legend behind this beautiful waterfall is that two brothers were in love with the same woman, a shepherdess.

One cloudy day, when she took her flock of sheep to pasture, both brothers, not knowing about the other’s love for the woman, stretched their arms toward her frightening her and causing her to slip down the mountain.

It is believed that she turned into a waterfall and the two brothers, horrified by the scene, become rocks that are now watching the waterfall from atop.

Situated in Busteni, a ski resort in the Carpathian Mountains, this waterfall is easy to reach following an easy hike track. If you plan on visiting, make sure you also check out the closeby Sfinx and the Caraiman Cross.

Cascada Valul Miresei

Valul Miresei means the bride’s veil in Romanian and the waterfall got its name from a legend that says that a bride fell from the cliff and her veil got stuck.

The people attending the wedding cried the bride here and that is how the waterfall came to life.

While most waterfalls in Romania have a legend behind them, what makes this one special is the surrounding landscape.
