Romania is beautiful and has lots to offer during all seasons, but for those who don’t like the cold, spring marks the opening of the travel season and one of the best times to enjoy nature in full bloom.

Best places to visit in Romania during spring

Maramures

Maramures is a region in the northern part of Romania and situated in the northeastern part of the Carpathians. It is one of the most important cultural regions of Romania as most of the centuries-old traditions are still sacredly kept to today. 

Maramures is mostly known for its crafts, particularly wood carving, which had a profound impact on the local architecture.

Home to more than 100 wooden churches, as a result of the prohibition against the erection of stone Orthodox churches by the Catholic Austro-Hungarian authorities, Maramures became an important hub for Christians. Some of the churches are part of the UNESCO World Heritage, being more than 400 years old.

Another unique place in Maramures is the Merry Cemetery. It is merry due to the humor-filled epitaphs on each grave.

The wooden crosses are beautifully carved and brightly colored, making it the only place in Romania to regard death as a happy event, which is thought to be inherited from the Dacians, who used to celebrate death.

Transylvania is one of the best places to visit in Romania during spring

While Transylvania is mostly known for Dracula, it has so much more to offer beyond Dracula. 

Surrounded by the Carpathians on the East and Southern parts, Transylvania is home to beautifully preserved Saxon villages, historic sites, lush nature, lively cities, and plenty of wildlife.

In fact, Transylvania is so stunning that Prince Charles bought several properties here and one of them is now open to the public as a guesthouse. He fell in love with Transylvania after visiting in the late 90s for the first time and he returned every year after. 

The favorite village of Prince Charles is Viscri, and if you get a chance to visit, you will understand why.

Built in a traditional Saxon style and home to one of the best-preserved fortified churches in the country, Viscri is the village that inspired Prince Charles to launch the Prince of Wales Foundation Romania, which aims to help preserve these beautiful villages. 

A 40-minutes drive from Viscri will take you to Sighisoara, one of the most beautiful cities in Transylvania and a must-visit destination. 

The historic part of the city is actually one of the oldest citadels in Europe that have been continuously inhabited. 

Home to cobblestone streets, centuries-old towers, historic buildings painted in bright colors, and plenty of lively taverns, cafes, and restaurants, Sighisoara is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Romania during spring.

Further away, deep in the heart of Transylvania, you can find Baile Tusnad. A beautiful spa town, known for its mineral waters, therapeutic mud, and strongly negative ionized air. Founded in 1842, Baile Tusnad is sought after by many people that seek to treat many illnesses, including heart disease. 

Apart from its therapeutic effects, Baile Tusnad is situated in a beautiful area, at the foothills of the Carpathians, surrounded by lush pine tree forests. Not far from the town, you can also visit, St. Ana Lake, the only volcanic lake in Romania and one of the most beautiful.

Libearty – brown bear sanctuary

Did you know that half of the brown bear population of Europe lives in Romania? 

This is both a blessing and a curse, as many bears reach into the hands of exploiters. This is where Libearty comes in, rescuing, rehabilitating, and caring for the less fortunate bears.

Some bears heal and are released in the wild, while others that are too old, will live their last days at the sanctuary. 

The team there does an amazing job at not just rescuing the bears but at raising awareness about the abuse of these beautiful animals. If you wish to support this cause, you should definitely pay the sanctuary a visit, although we must warn you that you will most probably have mixed feelings after leaving. 

Most of the visitors share with us that they are happy that efforts are made to protect the bear population, while at the same time they are heartbroken to learn what some of these bears went through before being rescued.

A short drive north from the sanctuary, you will find Poiana Marului, a beautiful village, where nature is the main attraction, and where you can practice horseback riding, biking, or simply take a hike while enjoying the surroundings.

Heading south from the sanctuary lies Bran Castle which was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel. While we do insist that there is so much more beyond Dracula that Transylvania has to offer, you cannot miss this historic site, if you are in the area.

The castle dates back to 1377 and currently acts as a museum, displaying art and furniture, collected by Queen Marie, the last Queen of Romania and wife of King Ferdinand I of Romania.

Bucharest

The weather is neither too cold, or too hot, the nature is in full bloom, making it a great time to explore the Old Town of Bucharest, one of the most beautiful areas in the city.

With cobblestone streets, historic buildings (some dating more than 300 years), plenty of cafes, restaurants, and bars, Bucharest Old Town is perfect for ending your travels to Romania.
