If you and your family are considering visiting Romania, you should know that it is an excellent destination for a holiday with kids.
Romania, one of the largest countries in Eastern Europe, is distinguished by multi-culturalism and natural wonders like the Carpathian Mountains and the Danube Delta.
Its thriving cities, fairy-tale scenery, lush forests, snowy peaks, and legendary traditions provide the ideal backdrop for both relaxation and adventure, offering countless unique travel experiences that are waiting to be discovered.
We are a nation with millennia of stories to tell, some mythological, some brutal, but always fascinating and deeply human.
Romania is still an under-the-radar travel destination, making it perfect if you are searching for authentic experiences and want to avoid crowds.
Here is a 1-week itinerary for a holiday in Romania.
BUCHAREST//DISCOVER BUCHAREST
Try putting this city in a box and you won’t manage.
The only sure thing is Bucharest is a city of strong contrasts. A relatively young city with old mentalities; with one foot in the Orient, yet hopelessly influenced by the West and belonging in fact to neither.
Walking is the best way to meet the various facets of the city, and that’s how you’re going to kick off your Romanian adventure.
There are plenty of activities that we can arrange for kids, depending on their age, such as creating a treasure hunt in the parks and museums, cooking workshops, trips with the local subway, boat rides on the lake, etc.
In the morning, start driving towards Transylvania, and your first stop is Brasov (180 km, 3 hrs).
On your way to Brasov, we recommend you stop in Sinaia, to visit Peles Castle. The Castle is roughly 2 hrs away from Bucharest and 1 hr before reaching Brasov.
Peles Castle is probably the most ornate among its Romanian peers. It is the former summer residence of the royal family and was built at the end of the 19th century, surprisingly modern for those times.
Optionally, also visit Pelisor Castle, part of the same complex as the larger castle of Peles.
For your stay in Brasov, we recommend:
For your meals in Brasov, we recommend:
After breakfast, take a short drive to discover the fortified churches in Prejmer (17.6 km, 30 min from Brasov) and Harman (9.2 km, 15 min from Prejmer).
Prejmer is part of UNESCO World Heritage, while Harman’s church has been recently renovated and is one of the largest in the region.
Have lunch at Marcela’s, where you will be welcomed into her beautifully renovated Saxon house, where she organizes incredible home-cooked dishes with genuine ingredients picked directly from her garden or the local markets.
Join Marcela in her kitchen and prepare lunch together.
For the kids, we can arrange various activities such as horseback riding, picking fresh vegetables from the garden, collecting chicken eggs, etc.
After breakfast drive towards Viscri (83 km, 1h 20 min), one of the most visited villages in Transylvania.
Although known to travelers, it is just a normal village, populated by Saxons, Romanians, and gypsies, with families going about their regular life.
Take time to visit the village and the fortified church that is part of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
For your stay in Viscri for 3 nights we recommend:
VISCRI 125
Discover the hidden treasures of Transylvanian heritage in this restored Saxon farmhouse.
The farm’s annex buildings and attics have been transformed into 6 cozy rooms with private bathrooms retaining the original distribution of space and architectural features.
Activities include:
MESENDORF GASTHAUS
This is an alternative option to staying in Viscri.
Check-in these traditional Saxon households from the charming village of Mesendorf (17 km, 30 min from Viscri), in the heart of Transylvania.
Activities:
Have breakfast and take an easy morning to explore the beautiful village of Viscri.
Visit the local craftsmen, hike around the hills surrounding the village or simply take time to enjoy the tranquility of the garden around Viscri 125.
VISCRI // VISCRI 125
Get ready for the afternoon with a delicious local lunch.
Viscri became internationally famous when His Majesty King Charles bought a house two minutes walk from Viscri 125, a charming Saxon house and barn.
Every meal at Viscri 125 is a Saxon feast in the hands of the redoubtable local cook, Mrs. Viorica aka tanti Vio.
Have breakfast and then start your journey towards Sighisoara (42 km, 60 mins), a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the few medieval citadels that are still inhabited.
Spend the morning visiting the fortified church, the Clock Tower, the covered stairs, and the guild towers. A local guide can join and give you an in-depth story of the citadel.
We suggest you have lunch in the citadel and plan a treasure hunt around the quaint houses.
Return to Viscri to spend the night.
After breakfast, drive straight to Bucharest (260 km, 4 hours) for a day in Romania’s capital.
Depending on your flight you can either spend another night in Bucharest or you can drive straight to the airport.
During your stay in Romania, our team at Beyond Dracula will be at your disposal to make sure you leave the country with good memories that will last a lifetime. On the ground, your guide/driver will be your go-to person for anything you and your family might need.
